Using What You Have

Updated: Jul 25, 2022

This post is about one of my favorite things. Recycle, reuse, and repurposing items for the homestead. Everything doesn't have to be the most expensive and from the store. Be smart and save some money and try and reuse items others throw away.

We use cat liter totes for nesting boxes, waterers, and for storage here on SAJES Homestead. You can cut part of the lid off for the nesting boxes. We screwed them into a pallet to secure them and keep them from moving or falling over. For waterers we add the little red cups to the sides and we have watering buckets. We also like have bought FireHouse pickle buckets and used those for waterers also.

We love to use pallets for small little areas we use to separate breeds for when we want to hatch. These areas are used for nursery areas for new mamas and also just to hold our toddler size chicks that are fresh out of the brooder box. We use pallets for roosting areas also for the chickens to roost at night. The next plan for pallets is to use them for our mushroom logs.

My dad recently ordered something that came in a large wooden box. He repurposed it and added hinges for a lid. Cut out the bottom and top and added chicken wire. And just like that we have a small brooder box.

One of our latest repurpose ideas was an aquarium stand. I put it in the chicken run and the chickens love to roost on it at

night and sleep. And it's easy to hose off and clean up.

Get creative and look at what you have around you. There are ways to save money and repurpose items that you normally would throw out.

We'd love to hear your ideas and what you use at your place. Comment below or on on FB page and share your ideas.
